Golf
and bagpipes are a perfect match, as both are steeped in years of
Scottish tradition.
In 2004, in what was probably the premier event of my career, I
performed the on-stage bagpipe solo for the Opening Ceremony of the
2004 Ryder Cup held at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills,
Michigan. Through the wonders of pre-recording, my playing could also
be heard during introductions of guest celebrities and of Ryder Cup
team members. During the months leading up to the Ryder Cup I worked as
Scottish Music consultant for Michael King, who developed the entire
opening musical component of the ceremony.
In 2005 my playing greeted participants in the Detroit Public
Television 2nd Annual Golf Classic at Red Run Golf Club in Royal Oak,
Michigan. That evening after dinner, my playing bid the participants
farewell as they departed.
In addition, I have played at a number of golf parties at private
homes, including one that celebrated the winning by the guest of honor
of two(!) prestigious golf tournaments in the same season.
